Osmose kakemono at the IUCN conference

Our partner the Nicolas Hulot Foundation attended the IUCN world conference last October in Barcelona and its boat sported a large kakemono banner presenting the Osmose project. Over 4000 delegates, experts, ecologists and conservationists were present at this event. Our modest NGO could not join the big mass, as participation fees are high enough to deter an association whose limited funds are dedicated to support a project in Cambodia.

New houses for Osmose families
lac
Funds from the Belgian NGO Terre des Hommes and from Femmes d’Europe have been granted to Osmose for the construction of houses for poor families in emergency needs. The donated 19000€ have allowed to build a total of 17 floating houses in 2007 and 2008.
Eight more houses will be built this year thanks to a funding from the Bazar International (Luxemburg). The driving force behind these projects is Mr. Roland Frère, whom we wish to personally thank here for his dedication to help the Cambodian people in general and Osmose in particular.

Pilot scientific project in Prek Toal

tourisme durable

In July 2008, the IUCN Netherlands approved a funding proposal of 53,000€ submitted by Osmose for a two-year pilot study and conservation of ponds in Prek Toal core area. The project will be implemented with the World Fish Center as scientific partner. It aims to provide the first data comparing fish productivity and bird reproductive success associated with protected and fished ponds. Gregory Duplant, a young French ethnobiologist has been recruited to lead this challenging project for Osmose.

New project coordinator

Last December, Eric Guérin succeeded Françoise as coordinator of the Osmose project. During three years, Françoise was at the helm of the project with indefatigable commitment and excellence. Alone a the helm of the boat, she ensured the successful journey through many perilous challenges – namely financial – with significant expansion of the project thanks to her brilliant results in fund raising. On behalf of the Osmose team, we wish to express here our sincere acknowledgements. Now the Eric era has started … After having several months of exploration and immersion in Cambodia in search for a project close to his heart, his path crossed the Osmose trail. The 40 year-old environmental engineer was seduced by the spirit of Osmose, and decided to jump on board for two years with great determination. Let’s wish him the best, hoping this mission will fulfill him. We are confident that Osmose has found an excellent and promising new captain.

Unseen demographic growths amongst large waterbirds

The Prek Toal ranger team of villagers and former poachers can be proud of their waterbirds colony protection work. The WCS conservation program in Prek Toal – which is the last breeding refuge for seven globally threatened waterbirds – is praised as a success story. Populations of all monitored species are recovering. On the verge of extinction back in 2001 (250 pairs), Oriental Darter is now thriving (5000 pairs make up the world largest colony), while other species such as pelicans, ibis, and adjutants exhibit slower population increases. Thailand bird expert Phil Round has trouble believing his binoculars: species he had seen being extirpated are reappearing in Siamese skies after dispersing away from the Tonle Sap colony.

Osmose on the surfing map…

All pages of the Osmose websites were finalized in 2008, so don’t hesitate to visit again. The visiting rate had doubled in one year, jumping from 1000 to 2000 visits per month between January and December 2008. Lots of visitors and friends, but as always, lack of generous members to sustain our project. To donate, just Clic here, and wire your donations / membership. The villagers and the environment of the Tonle Sap will much appreciate your help.
